Annie--Once, when my mother was at a party with my brother, he was telling her all about this great diet he was on-- and it allowed red wine. Well, she put down her vodka, picked up a merlot, and declared herself on the same diet! You go girl!

Have you tried the Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes...it's my all time favorite.
I don't think diets work. I mean they do for short periods but you just have to change proportions and eat what you love. It works and with a bit of exercise you could do it.
Diets suck...It's not worth it...you deprive yourself for a while then reward yourself for doing such a good job..soon you are part of the ya, ya, yoyo club. Try this...make your plate for the meal and eat 1/2 for 2 weeks...condition the body to expect less...then take a walk...or the next time you are shopping for groceries take a spot that is further than closer to the store...I'm just sayin';)
What Jules said...if you are eating balanced, healthy food - and I am including some wine and some "cake" (or whatever your pleasure is) in the "balanced" part...reducing quantity just a bit and upping walking, gardening - some sort of activity - the body will change.
I admit, that I do a bit of strength training - muscle burns more calories and also supports the bones ...and makes us less prone to injury in normal activity. You don't have to do a lot or have fancy equipment to make a difference. I do it from home with barbells and a balance ball...20 minutes 3 - 4 times a week. I walk a LOT, outside chores, a bit of bike riding - all stuff I enjoy - enjoying is key!
Welcome to my little corner of this big old world we inhabit! Put your feet up and stay a while. You just might find something you like! xoxome, abb
