Just kept walking toward my furry little friend and he just stayed where he was. Never flinched, let alone fled in fear from me or the two others in the lower garden. As I was leaving, I saw a guy on the other side of the fence about 3 feet from our deer friend. He'd hold out a handful of grass and Mr. Scrawny Antlers would come close and eat it. Eventually Mr. SA got tired of that action and began to meander my way.
I was still on the inside of our wonderful, glorious, deer-free fenced in garden..BUT...I held the goods! The green bean goods! Held one out to Mr. SA. He spent a good amount of time sniffing it before he decided it was ok to eat. And then he couldn't get enough! I couldn't pull them out of my Kate Bag fast enough to satisfy him! (Thank God for that fence - our summer bean harvest would have been devoured!)
He ate just about all I'd harvested, and when the supply was finally depleted, I really thought he was going to get his antlers stuck in our fence. Whoda thunk?!?! Deer can throw a most excellent tantrum!He was not at all happy!

P. S. - It will soon be deer season here in CT. I really do hope this fella is safe from bow hunting (know he's at least safe from gun hunting within Norwalk's city limits). He's tame and that is certainly the result of the area he lives in and the people that have fed him over the years (guilty myself of that a day ago). Deer are a problem in our area, but I still hate to see an animal who has been taught to trust humans be hurt and/or killed. Off my podium now. G'night!
AMAZING!!! You'd never get that close to a deer here, but we're not as populated here as you all are probably...that is just so cool, I'd probably have opened the door and let him live with me to protect him during hunting season..but that's me..hahaha..

ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed your garden this year. Mine was a bit less successful - a fungus hit the cukes and my heart just wasn't in it after losing Maxie. But next year I'll be back!

be very thankful for that fence... we had a deer a young buck that the neighbor bottle raised... he woudl come up behind you and kiss your ears... in the fall his little hormones got the better of him and he nearly broke my thigh (I HAVE BIG thighs) head butting it and trying to do what males do... he woudl also put his front feet on your shoulders... he scared the shit quite literally out of a georgia power man and he called the animal control... the deer bucky had to be relocated to a farm for tamed wild animals for his and the peoples safety... awesome pictures though and glad you shared... BUCKY loved hotdogs by the way so MR SA probably would too LOL

Sadly, I say, sadly because I am an animal lover and would want to feed them too but we cant .. really dont do it again because it does put them in danger .. they trust us and then someone shoots them with a gun, with an arrow or they get hit by a car trying to get to someone who will feed them.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately.. I know what Daryl is saying.. being in these parts often animals of the wild end up in a yard or two and a bong is formed only to leave someone.. namely me.. heart broken in the end.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't have resisted feeding him, but as someone else said...be very glad that fence was there. Someone that works with my husband had one they raised, and when fall came, it almost killed him when the hormones kicked in.

I think he's not really a regular deer, he's a reindeer fattening up for the Christmas trip. Hopefully he'll be toting a new computer with wireless and/or high speed internet for me.

I hope it's a quick kill if he is. The sad thing is that some people will hunt such an animal just for the trophy of it. They don't care about sportsmanship or anything else. A true hunter wouldn't do that.

Hi, I had a similar experience (without camera) with a fellow just like him not long ago. We stared long and hard at one another & I, too, hope that that new friend will be safe (it is very suburban here, so I think so).

The hunter always seem to have a good reason to kill these beautiful creatures, or cull them as they prefer to call it. We have taken their teritory...dunno what makes us think we deserve it more than they do...getting a bit morose, lovely pictures. Congrats on a POTW award from SmittenImage.
ReplyDeletewe have a family of five deer that sleep in our backyard at night. usually one or two are up on watch to alert the others. they got most of the low hanging grapes on our arbor and the bottom rung of pears. cool to see them that close. they have never let us feed them. congrats on the POTW!
