A Question of Balance (Oh and SWF!)

(No, this isn't a Moody Blues post, tho maybe someday it will be as I LOVE them)

There's all this professional photography talk about "using flash" or "not using flash", let alone anything else to do with any kind of picture taking. OK, you've completely lost me as I've not a clue about anything other than sometime liking what I see through my camera lens!!
I have my wonderful very simple little camera that fits into my pocket (waterproof you know!) that does next to nothing fancy, but takes really pleasing photos - at least to me. I've read about those folks who never ever use flash - so not real - and then those who think that at times it adds something to the composition of the shot they're taking. I just use my flash willy-nilly. And it works! For me at least...

Below are two shots of the same thing. The one taken with the flash was not intentional - I didn't know the flash setting was on automatic. The second is natural light.

I really don't know which one I like best.
What's your opinion?

  1. Gosh! It's a toss-up! They are both great shots.

  2. ...perspective. They're both awesome depending on your mood, but in general it's always good to go with the brighter option (even if the darker one is more appealing).

wv: jecardi. In Jamaica they use Jecardi rum, a home-grown spinoff of the more mainstream spirit. People say there's nothing like it.

  5. I like them both - they each have their own appeal.

  6. I like both. I'm with you in liking it simple...I'm strictly a point and shoot photographer who uses autofocus all the time. It would never even occur to me to turn on the flash outdoors.

  7. I think the first is better if your goal is to emphasize the details of the blossom. But for some reason, the second one is more pleasing to me. I like the contrast of the flower against the sky.

  8. There is nothing wrong with either of them. It gives two different shades o the color. I love them both, but tend to like the last one. that are great.

  9. Good shots both but I shall choose the second one.

  10. I am one of those no flash ever people .. the top shot was a flash shot it bleaches out the colors .. now I am not sure what color the flower was but I prefer it in the second shot ... with the shadows, nuances that real light gives

  11. The flowers are standing at centre stage, actors in the spotlight, as it were, in the first photo. But in the second, they are the person known only to their closest family!
