Strawberry Bounty

We went strawberry pickin' at Jones Family Farms today. My Connor-Man decided to join me and Nurse Nancy, along with son JBM led the way!

Did you know it is possible to pick 8.75 pounds of strawberries in just a bit over 20 minutes??? Me neither, until Connor-Man and I did! Those strawberries were so plentiful it was just silly! You're also free to eat as many berries in the field as you want. I'm quite certain we four had many more than our fair share (where's the whipped cream??).

And the flavor/smell/taste of a just picked sun-warmed strawberry?

Unbelievable!

I never want a store-bought strawberry again!

But...

What the hell am I going to do with 8.75 pounds of fresh picked strawberries???

  9. I say shortcake. Yum! I would take my sons every year to pick strawberries. I made jam back then and a shortcake or two. It's always more fun with helpers.

I used to make an excellent strawberry daquiri. Berries, a little half & half, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, crushed ice and Mount Gay rum. I just wanna say "AWESOME"!

  10. I am not sure about you, but I could eat a big, big part of those with no trouble at all.

  12. Chocolate Strawberry bread (can be frozen), strawberry jam, or strawberry-apple butter...I have included the recipe for you.

1 (6 ounce) can frozen apple juice concentrate
    1/4 cup sweet red wine
6 cups strawberries, cut in half
6 cups cooking apples, peeled, cored, and cut into quarters
    3/4 cup packed brown sugar
    1/2 cup strawberry schnapps
    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
    Pinch of ground cloves

Heat apple juice concentrate, wine, and fruit to boiling in a Dutch oven; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, about 1 hour, stirring occasionally until fruit is very soft. Put mixture into food processor to remove all lumps. Stir in remaining ingredients. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, about 2 hours, stirring occasionally until no liquid separates from pulp. Immediately pour mixture into hot sterilized jars leaving1/2 inch head-space. Wipe rims of jars; seal. Cool on rack 1 hour. Store in refrigerator up to 2 months.

Makes 6 jars (4 ounces each) of strawberry-apple butter.

  14. How beautiful! When I was a kid, I earned movie dimes by picking strawberries! Now, I would make strawberry sorbet, jam, shortcake and dip a few in melted chocolate for a little variety. Gosh, they are pretty!

  16. I'd be happy to help you dispose of them if I just lived closer!! They do look scrumptious! I've never picked them, but would to some day! But of course when some day comes I'll probably be too old to lean over that far and I'm almost there now!! Have a great weekend, Ann!
