A 65 Lb. Missourah Lap Dog

Cody, as some of you already know, is my parent's beloved pound puppy. My mother, who is a bit of a dog whisperer, well, whatever you call a woman who, more than once, has thought to herself while on an unrelated errand: "Hmmm...I think I'll go by the dog pound today and see what's there." First time she came home with the adored Cody I (now deceased) and this summer with Cody II. Cody II had a bit of adjusting to do when she first came to her new home. She didn't bark, didn't like going outside, and during the first thunderstorm wedged herself between the headboard and wall in mom and dad's bedroom. They had a heck of a time coaxing her out.
Then the summer relatives arrived. Cody found her voice and her love of all things children. She had the best summer swimming, boating, fetching, running, jumping into the pond, loving on the kids...and climbing up in laps. Below you can see her first stealthy maneuver...above you can see the end result.

Reports from the Missourah home front say that all is well in Cody-Land. Of course, Mom and Dad have had to resort to renting a kid every now and then so Cody can get her fix, and mom has had to spend some time firmly explaining to Cody that while she is very welcome to climb up on Bill's lap, Mom's is off limits! Cody doesn't much like that, but she gets to sleep at the foot of their bed on her very own doggie cushion, so that assuages her feelings somewhat. All in all, it's good to be Cody II! Doesn't she look at home? Yup, a 65 lb. lap dog!

Here, being loved on the fly by Dodgie.

  5. As far as I'm concerned, they are ALL lapdogs. I was watching Obama last night at my daughter's house, and her big (also adopted, aka rescue) dog did the same thing to me...he came over and said something to me, then first one leg, then another up on me, till he was in my lap..

  9. Cody is adorable, but I admit that I could not handle a lap dog that big! I'll have to stick with lap cats:-) She's a beautiful dog!

  10. I have a champion "dog lap". But Bill appears to do better with one 65 pound dog than I do with 3 6 pound dogs. I must still need practice!

  11. I love how animals don't really understand a lot of things--like the fact that they are not human, and may not be small, etc.

Pound dogs are the only way to go. But someone else has to get them, or I would bring them ALL back!

  12. Another dog that has no idea that it is actually a dog. I love it.

  13. That's quite the lap dog.

My mother got her last dog as follows: OK, first, let me tell you that she already had a million cats, several ducks and geese and two dogs.

Now. My mother got her last dog as follows: She trotted right into the pound and asked for the next one who was going to be put down. Out came Joleen, the strangest looking dog you've ever seen and the name is a darn good match for the dog.

Joleen not only jumps in laps, she gets upset when you sit on her, that's right HER couch.

  15. Annie: My daughter has a dog that is that size which is a real baby and will get on her lap when afraid. At least Cody does it out of love.

  18. Some say there's nothin' like a dame .. me, I say there is nothing like a rescued pup .. once they get used to being 'home' the love they give is limitless... I think your Mom rocks and clearly Cody does too!

  20. Sit, write, post. Good dog!

Yes, I am hoping that tomorrow is a go - that's the plan. Of course, all plans are subject to change when your child decides that he must come home to go to the victory parade.
