Saturday Bean Irritation, Part 2

First, please take a look at the photo below this one. Now, look at the above photo. Can you also see how much better the actual photo quality is when it's uploaded from Flickr instead of iPhoto onto blogger (above pic from Flickr, below from iPhoto)? Colors are definitely sharper. And when I view it on both the compose and preview blogger pages, the photo looks perfectly fine - black line surrounding on all four sides, cropping as it should be, photo perfectly centered. Then I publish it to blogger and all goes to hell in a hand basket. I've tried editing it in Flickr's paintbucket, and though I can make the photo smaller, it still doesn't publish to blogger correctly cropped, and even though I don't figgle with the color, when it's saved back to Flickr, the color is always decidedly off, not nearly as true as the original. Anyone know why this is happening to me? Personally I think it's an evil plot designed to make me finally go 'round the bend into complete blithering idiocy (a small bend indeed). On another note, if anyone has any helpful hints to this challenged Flickr gal wannabe, I'd love to hear 'em.

  1. There's a definite difference in the quality of the shot! I've always used Picasa and have always been happy with the quality of the pics when they're posted from there. Of course, Picasa and Google and Blogspot are all joined at the the hip, so maybe that makes it better, but I have no idea. Whatever, they look like great green beans!

Enjoy your day and do postpone going around the bend -- but we may meet up there one day as I have many when I'm sure I'm already there!!

  3. My advice...become a dot com and drop blogger all together. Your troubles will fade away.

  4. I can tell you why the photo above is sharper. The good photo has a much higher resolution (more pixels) than the poor photo. You can tell this by looking at the file size. Good = 162KB. Poor = 21KB. (The poor photo is physically smaller, but not enough to account for that much difference in file size.

However, I cannot tell you where in the process this drop in resolution is occurring. I don't use iPhoto (I have a PC) and I don't upload to blogger. Instead, I edit/crop on my computer, upload the edited photo to Picasa or Flickr, then use HTML to link to the photos on my Blogger blog.

I hope I helped at least a little bit.

  5. My guess is that if you're uploading a large file from your computer (direct from iPhoto to Blogger) Blogger needs to keep the image size small because it's supporting the file. If you upload to one of the photo sites (Picassa, Flickr or my favourite.. Photobucket) then those places actually support the photo in the size you determine, and Blogger only links to it, so the photo quality remains intact. This is just a guess, but it makes sense to me. ;)

  7. I don't know what the heck it is, but I do know that I'm blaming Flickr for all my bad photos.

  8. I can see the difference, but don't know the answer. I upload my photos with the program that came with my camera: FinePix. I don't have any trouble using it with Blogger. It isn't the best for editing at times, but I don't do too much editing.

  9. I don't know about your problem but your line about going round the bend into complete blithering idiocy (a small bend) sure got a chuckle from me...as well as thinking I know the feeling.
