SWF - Turkey Take-Off & Landing...Sorta

I know, I know...I've had a very similar photo to this already posted here on the TSC. But never have I been able to show you a video (poorly lit as it was at 4:45 pm yesterday afternoon) of my turkeys doing their nightly flight!

I've been trying to catch my turkeys flying up into their tree for some time now. But it's either it's been too dark, the camera's been AWOL in my car, I've been shoeless, or some other thing, and I've not had any success at it. However, yesterday, all the pieces finally fell into place (except for my coat being close at hand) and after what seemed like a bazillion cold minutes just standing there, I captured this gargantuan bird, who doesn't look like it should even be able get it's butt off the ground, lifting off and then landing in his night-time "bed", if you can call it that.  Never been more pleased - or cold!

  1. Hey Annie, I have to chuckle at you comments about the turkeys but I know just what you mean. Thanks for sticking it out and getting the video. I'm sure it was even more amusing in person. Turkeys are amazing birds! Just ask Ben Franklin.

But seriously are those really turkeys? No. Do they really fly?

  5. Those are wild turkey and they really do fly. And can fly for quite a distance to quite a height.

Certainly not graceful, but they get the job done getting up in their bedtime tree!

  7. Cool video! Glad you persevered for all of us. I didn't know they flew that well. I didn't know shoes were required for taking photos :-) I guess where you live they probably are.

  10. That is so cool! Are they wild turkeys or turkey vultures? I immediately thought of the WKRP episode, too. Have a great weekend, Annie!

  11. What an amazing video! We have wild turkeys all over the place, but the woods are too thick for us to EVER get a video like this!!! ( LUV my turkeys:) )

I'm still trying to figure out how those bottom-heavy birds EVER take flight!!!

  19. Annie that is a great catch. I have not managed to get them on video here either. There have been times when I could have but the lighting was too poor or I didn't have the camera...you know.
