A Dearth, Darts & A Disaster

I've been struck lately with a personal dearth of blog fodder. Actually I've been struck lately with a personal dearth of life fodder. It's like I'm not all here, though I'm no where else, so I must be all here. Oh well, that's a story for another day...or maybe I'll just ignore the entire dearthy thing. That ignoring thing usually works for me quite well - I've practiced it too often. Now on to happier things!

Yesterday I showed you a picture of a cake my daughter created - her second cake. The first cake Remy created was a dart board replica she made for her boyfriend who was participating in a darts tournament. I was certainly impressed!

Here's her finished product - again the cake was covered with fondant - which this time Remy painted instead of decorating with other fondant pieces. The cake was a success, unfortunately the dart tournament, not so much. But there's always a next time!

Lastly, this is a photo from the horribly devastating disaster, that occured in the Victoria area of Australia these last days. I don't know what it is about this photo, but it touches me deeply. A fire fighter stopping to share his water with an injured koala bear. Look how the bear's eyes are closed and how they are holding hands. Such a show of utter relief...and compassion.
"Local CFA firefighter David Tree shares his water with an injured Australian Koala at Mirboo North after wildfires swept through the region on Monday, Feb. 9, 2009. Suspicions that the worst wildfires ever to strike Australia were deliberately set led police to declare crime scenes Monday in towns incinerated by blazes, while investigators moving into the charred landscape discovered more bodies. The death toll stood at 181." Photo courtesy of the AP/Mark Pardew.

  1. Your daughter is just super talented! That cake is fantastic! The koala photo is heartbreaking. Such needless destruction, but comforting to know there is goodness out there in the midst of it.

  2. I just want to bring that koala into my home and take care of it. What a horrible tragedy in Australia - it's bad enough when wild fires start by natural causes, but the thought that they were set by humans is appalling. God bless the firefighters, the residents and the helpless wildlife.

  4. The fires are so scary ... that someone did this deliberately is heinous and I hope they are caught, tried and sent to prison ... that photo of the koala is touching ... makes me sad to think of all the people and animals lost in this tragedy

  6. Another gorgeous cake! Your daughter definitely has talent. I'll bet her boyfriend loved that cake!

What was so tragic about the Australia fires is that they were set by arsonists. How sick is that?

  7. Your daughter is a very creative person. I think the cake very beautiful. The last photo of the firefighter and the koala is very touching. My daughter lives in the north and says, that it is very strange, that it's so hot in the south of Australia, where it is always cooler than where she lives.

  8. That's a fantastic cake your daughter made. Its a prize winner. The picture of the fireman is most touching. Its hard to believe that so many lives have been lost and it may be arson. Terrible.

  16. It does not look like a cake at all. I can barely write Happy Birthday on the cake.
The story about the fireman and the koala was so touching.

  17. I saw that firefighter photo on the news last night. It is the greatest.

As to the dearth. I don't have a dearth of photos--I can go back into files to find something appropriate. Yikes! But that dearth of life experiences part is hitting me. It's not that anything is lacking--well, except the job that I loved and no longer have. I guess that's something lacking. And it has finally caught up with me. I need to reinvent myself. I just ahve to figure out how.
